Angel’s Envy is specific when it comes to whiskey. So when Lincoln Henderson decided to make rye, he went in a different direction. They started out the traditional way, insisting on a 95 percent rye taste profile. A rum finish, Lincoln decided, would be the perfect complement to already exceptional rye. They chose French cognac barrels that had previously been used to age rum. To cut a long story short, the barrels are antique and have traveled extensively. The age their rye for up to 18 months in these Franco Caribbean casks, resulting in a rare and unique whiskey that is also extremely approachable, even at 100 proof. Angel's Envy Rum Finished Rye is a very limited batch release, with only 2,500 9-liter cases available at launch.
“We considered finishing a spirit in rum casks for some time and ultimately felt that the spiciness of a well-rounded Rye provided the best pairing,” said Lincoln Henderson, Master Distiller, Angel’s Envy. “We sourced and sampled more than 100 different rums, before unanimously choosing one with the extraordinary richness that perfectly marries with our rye whiskey.”
Sugar, maple, and an almost sherried quality with notes of raisins and figs greet the nose. On the palate, spicy rye flavors, molasses and rum, more rye, and It's almost as if it can't decide whether it's a rye whiskey or a rum, but we enjoy it as fans of both. All of these conflicting flavors are layered very clearly at 100 proof. With pepper and baking spices, the rye nearly takes over the finish, but a touch of candied maple helps to balance things out. In a sea of ryes sourced from southern Indiana, this is a real standout.
