Who is Pappy Van Winkle?

Julian P. "Pappy" Van Winkle Sr., a real craftsman, lived by the motto, "We make fine bourbon at a profit if we can, at a loss if we must, but always fine bourbon." He is the inspiration of Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon. His name has come to be associated with excellence in the bourbon world. Pappy Van Winkle was the country's oldest active distiller. The label of the bottle features a shot of him smoking a cigar.

Pappy Van Winkle Whiskey is the unicorn of bourbons, noted for its excellence and scarcity. But unfortunately, whiskey is one of the most difficult to come by, and it's regarded as the pinnacle of excellence worldwide. One New York bar even charged $315 for a shot of Pappy.

The prestigious Kentucky bourbon brand has a rich flavor — a spicy-sweet blend of nutty oak, honeyed citrus, maple, and vanilla — and an even greater history.

Pappy Van Winkle Whiskey - The Glorious History

Pappy began his bourbon career as a traveling salesman for W.L. Weller and Sons in 1893. The A. Ph. Stitzel Distillery, which made bourbon for Weller, was subsequently merged by him and a coworker, Alex Farnsley. The Stitzel-Weller Distillery was formed when the two enterprises combined. Stitzel-Weller, which was opened on Derby Day in 1935, immediately became recognized for its wheated bourbon recipe, which uses wheat instead of rye in the mash for a softer, smoother flavor. Pappy stayed active in the Distillery until he died in 1965, at 91.

Pappy Van Winkle was the first of four generations of Van Winkles to make bourbon. Julian Jr., Julian's son, operated the Stitzel-Weller Distillery until it was sold in 1972. Julian Jr. revived the Old Rip Van Winkle label before Prohibition, utilizing whiskey stocks from the old distillery. Julian III, Julian's son, took over in 1981 and, with his son Preston, continues to operate the Van Winkle brand at Buffalo Trace Distillery.

Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon - The Secret is in the Mash

Pappy Van Winkle bourbon has a higher wheat content than most other bourbons. It must contain at least 51% maize to be classified as bourbon. Pappy then substitutes wheat for rye, resulting in a sweeter whiskey and fruitier whiskey.

The Pappy frenzy began in 1996 when the Beverage Testing Institute gave the 20-year Pappy Van Winkle a 99 out of 100 ratings, the institute's highest ever for a whiskey.

We weren't joking when we said it reminded us of a unicorn. The distillery barely produces about 7,000 cases per year or about 84,000 bottles. "At a profit, if we can, at a loss if we must, but always good bourbon," is the distillery's slogan for whiskey manufacture.

Is Old Rip Van Winkle & Pappy Van Winkle Bourbon Same?

The "Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery" owns Pappy Van Winkle bourbon, which is the company's leading brand of bourbon whiskey. The Sazerac Company distills and bottles it in its Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve is widely recognized as one of the best bourbons globally, yet it can be challenging to find because of its limited production and great demand.

The Sazerac Company's Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, produces Old Rip Van Winkle Bourbon Whiskey, a Kentucky Straight Bourbon whiskey.

Pappy Van Winkle is frequently confused with its sister brand, Old Rip Van Winkle, misleadingly because "Pappy" is significantly more expensive.
