Smoke Wagon Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey

Despite the fact that Small Wagon is a distillery, much of the spirits used here are derived from MGP (the massive bulk spirits distilling company). In this scenario, they start with MGP's "high rye" whiskey, which is purportedly made from a blend of 60% corn, 36% rye, and 4% malted barley.

The difference between the two "strains" of MGP whiskey in this bottle is the aging. Both begin with the identical bourbon formula, but one is aged for eight years in a charred new oak barrel, while the other is aged for only four years. To make the bottle we see today, the two distinct aged whiskies are blended together. Barrels are hand-selected to create an ideal blend that is smooth while yet being bold and intense, ensuring a unique and consistent flavor.

These spirits are usually bottled in dark brown glass. Smoke Wagon, on the other hand, produced a bespoke design only for them. However, there is a work of art embossed onto that glass: a general flower pattern surrounding a flat circular region where a wax stamp with the distillery's insignia is located. Their Latin slogan is "Bibamus Moriendum Est," which appears in their logo. Which translates to "drink, for we must die," a somber reminder to make the most of the time we have rather than squander it on lousy bourbon.

Okay, enough of this bottle. Small Batch Bourbon has a medium-intensity aroma that smells fantastic in the glass. The sweetness of the scent, particularly some of the caramel and roasted sugar notes from the barrel, is the first thing that strikes you. Raw maize, orange citrus, and a smidgeon of vanilla round out the flavor. This drink is great in any way- neat, on the rocks, or cocktails.
