This 113.8 Proof Rye Whiskey is matured in hand-selected white oak barrels for four years. On the fragrance, there are cherry notes with traces of wood. There's cherry, vanilla, and a ton of spices on the palate. Spice dominates the aftertaste, with a hint of cherry on the back. Willet has created another fantastic Rye Whiskey.
Willett Family Estate Bourbon is one of the best new ryes launched in the last few years. For the first time in over 30 years, Willett began distilling their own whiskey on-site in the early 2010s. They commemorated this achievement in 2014 by releasing a two-year-old rye whiskey. Since then, they've continued to age their rye whiskey, sticking to a four-year age statement for their basic rye, while younger and older age statements are available. It's a tiny batch that's only available at barrel proof.
The barrels used in this small-batch blended to create an incredible drink, Willett 4 Year Rye.
There's a gorgeous layering of brandied cherry over a slightly tangy cherry on the nose. With time, it expands out, reminding you of slicing into a treat with your fork, releasing cinnamon and baking spices with just a trace of oak to remind you that this is a high-proof juvenile bourbon. It feels like robust rye with dark cherry, burnt vanilla, and spices on the palate. It's flavorful rye with a dense texture. The aftertaste is long, and the spices take center stage in this batch, while the cherry does make its way to the top.
It's unbelievably well balanced, with the alcohol so well incorporated at 115 proof that you'll forget it's there, yet with each sip, you'll find yourself smiling more and more.
Willett 4 Year Rye distinguishes out because of its distinctive flavor character. This whiskey is captivating from start to finish, from the nose to the flavor. The flowery and herbal scents are retained on the nose, while layers of rich caramel undertones are added. You'll notice some unique taste characteristics on the palate that aren't commonly found together. While some boutique distilleries have created unique taste ryes in their own right, they frequently struggle to get rid of their youth and graininess. Willett excels in this area. The 4 Year's sip has surprising depth, and while the finish has a toasted grain aroma, it adds dimension rather than being distracting. This whirling and layering of clashing sensations eventually come together, and this patchwork of flavors works despite all odds.
